Adding multiple HTTPS bindings to different certificates

Audience: L2 Agents and Administrators

Question

Is it possible to add multiple HTTPS bindings to different certificates on MS Internet Information Services 7 (IIS 7)?

Answer

  • You would need to assign a different IP address for each SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) binding, so each IP address's port 443 is used to serve the SSL traffic.
  • While you can use host header binding for port 80, you cannot do this for secure traffic. You can assign multiple IP addresses to a single NIC (Network Interface Card), so no need for more hardware.
  • You would need to make sure to bind each site to the relevant IP in IIS 7, and do not use the all unassigned option.

However, it is worth noting that IIS 8 now supports SNI (Server Name Indication) which allows multiple HTTPS sites on the same IP for modern browsers. You can find more information on this page: What is SNI technology?
